BEFORE HIREUA
The Idea Started With One Great Hire.
Kyle Mau moved to Ukraine in 2016 and built internet businesses from Eastern Europe. Like most founders, he was doing too much himself. The first Eastern European hires changed that — first by taking repetitive production work off his plate, then by showing him how much more capable remote talent could be when the person was genuinely good.
By 2021, that lesson had turned into a small recruiting business. The first years were modest. A recruiter handled candidates. Another teammate handled clients. Kyle handled almost everything else.

2021
A Small Recruiting Business Starts.
The company began as ExecVA, initially focused on connecting Western businesses with Ukrainian remote talent. It was small, scrappy, and mostly founder-run.
FEB 2022
Russia Invades Ukraine.
Kyle woke to air-raid sirens in Kyiv. His wife was pregnant. After a night of explosions and uncertainty, they left the city and spent days reaching the Polish border.
At the same time, the business was suddenly facing an existential question: what happens to a Ukrainian recruiting company when candidates and team members are living through a war?
APR 2022
Everything Changes Again.
After leaving Ukraine, Kyle and his family spent time in Prague and then returned to California. Weeks later, his mother was diagnosed with stage-four colon cancer.
That period forced another decision: life was too short to stay in an unhappy business partnership. Kyle split from his partner and rebranded ExecVA as HireUA.
2022–23
The Company Takes Off.
The rebrand broadened the mission beyond one title and eventually beyond one country. The team grew. Revenue accelerated. By early 2023, the business had crossed the $100,000-per-month mark.
The lesson was increasingly obvious: the advantage was not “cheap Ukrainian VAs.” It was knowing how to identify overlooked professional talent and match it to the right seat.
JUN 2023
The Hardest Part Had Nothing To Do With Business.
Kyle flew home to California after learning his mother was near the end of her life. She passed away twelve days after he arrived.
A few weeks later, the team still had its first major in-person gathering planned in Warsaw. Kyle went. The business kept moving — not because the moment was easy, but because a growing team now depended on the company being bigger than one person.
